Anna's Question: How important are certified credentials (such as degrees) in a specific field, as opposed to experience in that field?

About Jen Maki: Jen Maki is an established graphic designer, photographer and photojournalist. She currently works as Marketing Art Director for D Magazine in Dallas TX.
Jen's Answer: In my experience, education is important, but it isn't everything. A degree can help you to get an initial job interview, and a good education can certainly put you ahead of the game, but studying on your own and determining that you are going to get what you want---no matter what---are also important.

I would suggest finding out the programs, equipment and technical proficiencies that are required for the type of job you want to get, and finding out whether or not you will receive training for them while seeking your degree. If they do not, purchase the programs and books you will need in order to teach yourself. (As a student, you should be eligible for discounts.) Try getting an internship or apprenticeship. Many working independent photographers would love to have an assistant help them on shoots, so consider asking your friends and family if they have any photographer friends that might be willing to take you under their wing for a period of time.

Go ahead and get your degree, but while doing so, take an active role in your own future and education. I'm sure you'll go far.
