Andrew's Question: What are some of the best ways to make connections or network?

About Kareem Roustom: Syrian born Kareem Roustom is a Oud (Arabic lute) player and an award-winning composer who has composed and arranged music for film, television, the concert hall, and album projects. Steeped in the musical traditions of the Arab Near East and trained in Western music, Roustom is a much sought after composer who has collaborated with artists ranging from the Philadelphia Orchestra to Shakira. Roustom has several feature films to his credit. He won the Best Musical Score Award for his score for the documentary Encounter Point at the 2006 Bend International Film Festival. Roustom's concert music has been performed in the USA, Europe, and the Middle East.
Kareem's Answer: Assuming you are interested in film music, here are some thoughts that you might find helpful:

First of all, be ready. Know your craft inside and out, and have a professional sounding CD, or, if possible, a DVD of your work. For independent film, you can start looking for possible projects by making the same rounds that actors do. Try your state's official film office. Such offices list a number of projects in various stages of production. Pre-production is a great time to try and get in touch with the producer or director. Check print and internet sources that list acting auditions. If you can find a phone number, go ahead and call. If all you have is an e-mail address, make sure your website is in great shape and easy to navigate before sending an e-mail. When cold calling, be prepared for rejection, but don't be discouraged; the more you try, the better the odds. Local film schools are also a great way to hone your skills and build your reel. By working on student films, you can make, in many cases, long lasting relationships. If Coldwater Canyon and the Hollywood Hills are in your sights, I highly recommend trying such openings as BMI's Pete Carpenter Fellowship, ASCAP's conducting and film music workshops, The Sundance Film Music Lab, or the Turner Classic Movies Young Film Composers Competition. Eventually, you'll have to move to Los Angeles if that is the style of film that you want to work on. If you are serious about this path, you should plan on a commitment of, at the very least, 10 years. Nothing worth doing is easy, so be sure, really sure, that this is truly where your passion resides.
